• Mission
Nonsmokers working in smoky environments double their risk of getting lung cancer.  On the other hand, smokefree policies decrease absenteeism among non-smoking employees and increase productivity. We believe the Idaho economy benefits from a healthy workforce. Providing smokefree workplaces is an effective way to prevent the many diseases caused by exposure to secondhand smoke and will save Idaho taxpayers and businesses money. Currently, 29 states have comprehensive, smokefree workplace laws, which eliminate smoking in all indoor workplaces including restaurants, restaurant bars and stand-alone bars. Numerous compelling studies have established the link between health and secondhand smoke. There is no safe level of secondhand smoke exposure and employees are often forced to work in smoke-filled restaurants and bars.
Currently Idaho state law protects many employees from the dangers of second hand smoke.  All employees should be protected because the health hazards are real and measureable.  No one should have to choose between a job and good health. The Coalition for a Healthy Idaho is a group of organizations and citizens concerned about the toll of tobacco in Idaho and as such worked on the original statewide Clean Indoor Air Act passed in 2004.  Since that time members have often been asked, why not allwork places (most frequently bars) are smoke free. With broad support, the coalition embarked on a campaign for a smokefree Boise.  Boise was chosen as the first because an ordinance in the largest city in Idaho would affect the greatest numbers of workers in the state.  Because of interest around the state, it soon became clear the efforts needed to include the communities and the campaign became Smokefree Idaho. Boise implemented a comprehensive smokefree ordinance January 2, 2012.   The movement in Boise has put the smokefree issue in the forefront of people’s mind throughout the state.  People, including bar owners in several communities have tracked the progress of the changes in Boise and initiated efforts to encourage their city council members to enact an ordinance in their communities.
